Out of the Mouth of Babes

Matthew teaches us, “Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18

How do we become converted as little children?

Recently, my friend, Emi, asked some 3- and 4-year olds to complete the prompt “If the Savior stood beside me I would feel…” Here are their responses:

Graham: If the Savior stood beside me, I would be good, nice and helpful. I would make good choices and say kind words to my brothers.

Gabby: My Savior is Jesus Christ. He died on the cross for us and came back alive and that makes me feel good.

Piper: I love Jesus and I’m so grateful I can feel him close to me when I pray and choose the right.

Ivy: I love Jesus and I’m so happy I get to live with him again someday.

Asher: If the Savior stood beside me, I would smile and help others smile. It would feel like having my big brother with me.

What pure and precious responses these sweet little ones shared!

Jean Stevens queries, “What is it we should learn from children? What qualities do they possess and what examples do they demonstrate that can help us in our own spiritual development?

“These precious children of God come to us with believing hearts. They are full of faith and receptive to feelings of the Spirit. They exemplify humility, obedience, and love. They are often the first to love and the first to forgive.”

It is no wonder that the Savior sought out these little ones and demonstrated great love to them throughout His ministry. “…Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.” Luke 18

If we can become as little children and be humble, obedient, believing, loving, forgiving, and kind, I know we will more fully feel the Spirit of Christ in our lives, for in so doing, we will be following His perfect example. We can also complete the phrase, “If the Savior stood beside me I would feel…”  I know if the Savior stood beside me I would kneel at His feet, and bathe them in my tears of gratitude and love for Him. I would embrace Him and let His all encompassing peace and love wash over me. We can remember that we are all children of a loving God who is waiting for us to “be converted and become as little children.” May we have believing hearts, and in simple, pure ways seek and follow Jesus Christ throughout our lives.

In faith,

Christie
