Putting the First Commandment First

“If I’m too busy to read my scriptures, I am busier than God ever intended me to be.”

I have noticed in my daily scripture study that the primary message of the scriptures is that we should love the Lord with all our hearts.

Ezra Taft Benson, speaking of this greatest of all blessings and responsibilities, pointed out:

“The world largely ignores the first and great commandment—to love God—but talks a lot about loving their brother. . . . But only those who know and love God can best love and serve his children, for only God fully understands his children and knows what is best for their welfare. Therefore, one needs to be in tune with God to best help his children.”

If we desire to help our friends and neighbors most, then we must put the first commandment first, and love God. In the scriptures it says, how do you know a master you do not serve? If you want to speak with God you pray, and if you want God to speak with you, you read your scriptures! I must spend time daily speaking with Him and reading, so that He may speak to me. This is how my heart is continually changed. I sacrifice my time to be with Him in prayer and scripture, and He magnifies the light I am able to receive from Him.

I had a friend this week tell me that her husband liked a sympathy card I gave them at the recent passing of his grandmother. He had said, “It was very sweet, and a lot of Jesus.” I still smile at that, because that is exactly who I am, and want to be more of! I hope to not just say it, but to show Him and become like Him! I love my Savior, Jesus Christ, and my Father in Heaven. I know they love me. I also know they love you and desire you to return to live with them again.

My greatest blessings have come through loving God and showing it through my obedience to His commandments and striving to live His gospel and teachings faithfully. As I have come to know Him, I have received more light and inspiration that allows me to know how to better keep the second commandment to love my neighbor as myself. I know that as you choose to put God first, He will do so much more with your life than you ever could do on your own!

I invite you to love God, to spend time with Him, and come to know Him as He knows and loves you!

In faith and love,

Monique
