And We Don’t Even Know It

Last week I was frantically trying to cram in as much housework as possible in the last couple of minutes before pulling out of the driveway to deliver my kids to school. I was switching laundry over and topping off the dishwasher, while grabbing the forgotten lunch or jacket along the way. All the while my kids were waiting in the car. Impatiently waiting. How do I know they were impatient? By the sound of the car horn sounding every 5.2 seconds.

Once I got in the car I was welcomed with protests to the effect of, “What took you so long?” and “We are going to be late because of you, Mom!” Other children were fighting over who got to sit in which seat, and so on… you get the picture.

Now, some days I might have mirrored their impatience and gotten after those ungrateful children of mine, BUT I didn’t. On that particular day I was feeling more reflective.

I thought how my relationship as a mom with my kiddos is much like God’s relationship with us.

All of the things I was doing inside the house and out of the sight of my children was essentially because of or for them; for them to have clean clothes, clean dishes to eat on, food to eat come mealtime. But because they could not see me doing it they did not express or feel grateful feelings.

How much does God do for us behind the scenes? How often is He orchestrating our long term well being all the while we grumble because of our ignorance of what is best.

Life down right stinks sometimes. Whether by our own doing, someone else’s, or maybe just because it is the nature of life. At any rate, I firmly believe and was impressed that day with this truth:

God works all things for our benefit.

It might not look how we thought it would and it may come later than hoped, but be assured that He is working all things for your good. He will not take away our power to choose, but He is doing all He can to orchestrate all for our good.

Sometimes it is hard to feel this truth when life knocks us down.  Here are a few scriptures to help us remember.

Luke 11:13 “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”

James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights,…”

John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Matthew 6:8 “…for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”

John 14:18 “I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you.”

Next time your efforts go unnoticed or your service is not appreciated, let it be a reminder to remember how God is in the details of our lives and is constantly working behind the scenes and completely orchestrating it all for your good.

One way I am seeking to more fully see how God is orchestrating my life is by writing down one way I have seen God’s mercy in my life that day.  I have found this helpful in increasing my awareness of Him more. I am seeing Him in the details, daily.  I recommend it.

Give it a try!
