A Lesson from the Count of Monte Cristo

I admit it. I am a hopeless romantic. “The Count of Monte Cristo” is one of my favorite movies. Edmond Dantes is a Frenchman who is wrongfully accused and jailed for thirteen years. During his imprisonment, Dantes devises an elaborate plan of vengeance upon those who wronged him. He escapes from Chateau D’If, and after finding a bounty of treasure, he returns to France to get even with his conspirators.

Dantes’ true love, Mercedes, questions, “I don’t know what dark plan lies within you. Nor do I know by what design we were asked to live without each other these sixteen years. But God has offered us a new beginning…don’t slap His hand away.”

Dantes asks, “Can I never escape Him?”

Mercedes counters, “No, He is in everything. Even in a kiss.”

I admire Mercedes and her belief in God’s presence. Recognizing God’s hand in our lives makes everything better. How often do we take time to reflect on the infinite ways that God blesses and watches over our lives? Evidence of His love is everywhere!

I am reminded of a simple children’s hymn, My Heavenly Father Loves Me.

Whenever I hear the song of a bird
Or look at the blue, blue sky,
Whenever I feel the rain on my face
Or the wind as it rushes by,
Whenever I touch a velvet rose
Or walk by our lilac tree,
I’m glad that I live in this beautiful world
Heav’nly Father created for me.

God is a loving Father in Heaven who loves us all perfectly. His love is evident in the blessings He gives us. From the beauty of the world to the people in our lives, God is constantly blessing us in big and small ways because He loves us. God’s infinite love is expressed in the ultimate gift of our Savior. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” So don’t slap His hand away. Look for the evidence that is poured out abundantly upon the world and upon us.

May we all feel the witness of God’s eternal, perfect love for us.

In faith,
